Death Notice

“The Embroidery Lady” – After a lengthy bout with cancer, Shirley Ann Flesher passed away at the age of 75 on Wednesday, August 2, 2017, at Bluewater Health. Beloved wife of Frederick “Eric” James Flesher. Loving mother of Cheryl (Bill), Moira (Tim), and the late James (2004), and mother-in-law of Leah. Cherished grandmother of Devon, Meagan, Chloe, Max, Avery and Jesseny. Shirley was born in Derby, England to her parents Charles and Ada Cooper. At the age of 18, Shirley enlisted in and proudly served with the Royal Air Force, as a PBX Telephone/Wireless Operator. It was during this period while serving in the RAF, that she met and married her husband Eric when they were both stationed at Royal Air Force Aldergrove, Co, Antrim, Northern Ireland. After their time in the RAF, Shirley and her husband with their children, Cheryl and Moira, immigrated to Canada in 1966, first settling in Sault-Ste-Marie, where their son James was born, then moving to Sarnia in 1968. Shirley was employed through the years as a store sales clerk with various businesses in town, always enjoying kibitzing with the customers. An animal lover, gardener, bird watcher and talented crafts-person, Shirley was also one of the first people, along with her husband, to volunteer with the fledgling Victim Services Program in Sarnia-Lambton. In her retirement, Shirley also took up embroidery, dried flower design and other hobbies, she would then randomly give out samples of her efforts as spontaneous gifts to people she felt had shown her kindness. Shirley will always be remembered by many people for her fun-loving attitude and her kindness to those in need. Heartfelt appreciation goes out to Dr. Michael O’Mahony, Dr. Kim, Dr. Crombeen, and all the extremely professional nursing and technical staff at Bluewater Health for their wonderful care and comfort they rendered to Shirley. The family’s gratitude also goes out to Dr. Inculet, Dr. Louie, and the staff at the Victoria Hospital in London, Ontario. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service to celebrate Shirley’s life will be held at SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 1576 London Line, Sarnia, on Wednesday, August 9, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. Sympathy may be expressed through donations to the Sarnia & District Humane Society (cheques only at the funeral home please).

    Dear Mr Flesher,

I was so very sorry to hear of your dear Shirley's passing. You took exceptional care of her at home for many months. I know she was very grateful for your always comforting presence. I will treasure the lovely embroidered butterfly she gave me soon after we met. So sweet. I think of her and smile every time I look at it. She was a special lady indeed.

    Very Sincerely

    Teresa at VON
