Long before shoulder cams, Roger inducted me into the school of videotaping with discrete components, a skill I later shared with the McGill Redmen hockey team. Camera, tripod, monitor and s reel-to-reel Betamax helped the coaching staff analyze the play looking for ways to improve.. in a 20 game season, there was much joy after their first win. My first summer job; I'll never forget it -- or Roger!

My deepest condolences to the family. My earliest memories of John go back over 50 years ago when he hung out with my older brother, John. I thought that this guy was weird. But the more I saw of him the more I began to understand what he was saying and what he stood for. A deeply religious man and what I would call "a straight shooter". John would always tell you what he was thinking, whether you wanted to hear it or not. That was what was unique about him. "NO BULL". As a young man, I found wisdom in what he said and learned not to take things at face value but to dig deeper to get to the truth. I have not seen or heard from John for a number of years now but I always enjoyed our lively conversations and our trips to the Pontiac Silverdome to see the Detroit Lions take another pounding from their opponents. At last all I can say is rest in peace my friend, you have made a solid mark on this mortal soil and I have no doubt that you are in heaven.
Janice McCullough Schmeltzer | January 27, 2018 09:01pm
John's grandmother Edna Graham was a sister to my great-grandfather Jack Graham. I never met him nor had I even heard about him. Gilda Morina Syverson | January 2, 2018 02:51pm
I am so sad to hear of Venera's death. She was such a dear colleague and friend. I learned so much from having known her. I am deeply sorry for your loss, Dwayne, Natasha, Alice, Steve and the rest of the family, and to all of the wonderful Canadian Italian writers that I got to know and finally meet because of Venera. Please know that my husband, Stu, and I have you all in our thoughts and prayers and will continue. Venera, you will always be in our hearts.
John Wendy Sutherland | January 1, 2018 07:03pm
Dwayne and family, we were deeply saddened to hear of the loss of your partner in life, and mother to your children. Please hold onto the wonderful memories of Venera and the family life that shared together. You and Alice are in our thoughts and prayers at this time.
Lynda Edmonds | December 31, 2017 05:51pm
We deeply appreciate the relationship we began with Venera and Dwayne, in our twenties. Venera & I; two social workers and Heye & Dwayne; two engineers, were a precious foursome. Once we all left Calgary, we would take a deep dive into our families' lives with phone calls to celebrate our birthdays. I was touched by Venera's committment to live an authentic life. Her gentle strength, her moral compass and her spectacular dinner parties, made her an irreplaceable friend. We send our condolences to Dwayne and want you and your family to know that you can always count on our friendship. Lynda & Heye

Deepest condolences to all of the family. Such a sad loss. She was a beautiful person so open, welcoming and kind. I am forever greatful for her encouragement and faith in me as a writer. Venera was so talented and she helped many others to shine. I will never forget meeting her and her wonderful family at her beloved Bafia, Sicily. May her bountiful heart find peace.
Gianna Patriarca | December 31, 2017 01:26am
When I first met Venera along with her dear buddies Delia and Carmen at an AICW event I knew I had found 3 sisters. Venera always addressed me as 'sunshine woman' how i will treasure those two words from a woman, poet and friend who was one of the most genuine and giving persons I have had the honour to know. My sincerest wishes of strength and courage to her family, I know her love and the memories shared will comfort you always. God Bless, Gianna Patriarca

My deepest condolences to Dwayne, their children, Alice, and her whole family on Venera's passing. She was such a wonderful person whose friendship I treasured. She was a true artist, a caring person, and a great editor who brought together a whole literary community. She accomplished so much with her poetry, her anthologies, and her organizing spirit. It was an honor for me to call Venera a friend. I treasure the times we spent together reading our work at conferences and when she visited here in Philadelphia. She continues on in the spiritual dimension and in all of our hearts.

Sad to hear about Venera passing. Deepest condolences to Husband and Children.
Debra Scott | December 30, 2017 10:05am
Words alone cannot describe the lovely person that Venera was. I met her through a quilting class. She was beautiful quilter! We became friends and we realized we lived two blocks away from each other. Venera was a soft-spoken, gentle, kind person! I felt so blessed to have spent some time with her in the past few years. She always had a smile on her face of appreciation of our friendship. I will miss her. I wish to thank her family for sharing Venera with all who came to see her in her final days. I so appreciated being able to say good-bye and talking with her family while they were grieving. Thinking of Venera and her family at this difficult time. Sending Warm hugs and prayers to each one of you. Blessings
Louisa Calio | December 30, 2017 09:22am
Sending condolences to all who remain. She was a wonderful woman to know and work with.
Maria Lisella | December 29, 2017 04:50pm
I am just now realizing I promised to send notices to all of Venera's friends in the NY-area. I have delayed doing this because of Christmas, is what I told myself, but in reality, writing up an obit, sending it around, makes her absence all too real to me. Speaking for both Gil Fagiani and I, when we met Ven, we felt we had met a cousin and we feel that still. Venera brought us into a circle of warm and loving people too -- writers, friends, relative. Our hearts go out to Dwayne, Natasha, Alice, Steve and all the Canadian friends in Sarnia and beyond. Her smile will never leave our memories.
Susan Braidwood | December 29, 2017 10:09am
I knew Venera back in her Calgary days in the 70's. (Back then, we knew her as Verna.) I recently made contact with her again, and I was so sorry to hear that she was ill. I remember her intelligence and her calm, deliberate way of speaking. Dwayne, my condolences to you and your family.
Wayne and Valdene Wager | December 28, 2017 10:00pm

My deepest condolences to Venera's family. I will remember Venera as a kind and lovely person who contributed generously to the Association of Italian Canadian Writing. The anthologies that she edited for the AICW gave many of us aspiring writers a chance to publish our writings and I'm grateful for her dedication. We will miss her. RIP, Venera.
Anna Sampson | December 26, 2017 05:54pm
Dear Dwayne,Natasha,Steve,Alice To many your wife, mother, nonna was Venera. But in my heart she will always be Verna. The young easy going cousin that I grew up with in Dundas. Now, I'm remembering two carefree content girls picking strawberries for summer cash and violets for their fragrant. I will miss her loving thoughts. Thinking of you and how your generous hearts made Venera very happy. Love, Anna

To Dwayne, Natasha, Steven and Alice. We are very saddened to hear of Venera's passing. Venera was such a kind, sensitive, warm, compassionate person. Venera made big contributions to our Association of Italian-Canadian Writers. I first met her in one of our early AICW meetings in Montreal along with Delia. I remember her as a humble, energetic and very creative person. It is always a shock to lose a friend, and to realize that she passed away at just 71, the age I am now. Yes, long walks in the woods. Emma and I give our condolences to Venera's family. --- Joe Pivato

Roger Lemieux
February 11, 2018
December 30, 1931, Sault Ste Marie, Ontario - February 11, 2018, Sarnia, Ontario. After a long, full life, Roger Lemieux took his last breath on February 11, 2018. Son of Joseph, a private who earned the Military Medal in WWI for his role in capturing Bellevue Spur near Passchendaele, and Alice Charlebois, matriarch of the family farm, Roger came from strong stuff. He descended from a Lemieux brother, Pierre or Gabriel, “men of the musket and axe,” who arrived in New France in the early 1600’s. Alice descended from Jean Charlebois, a soldier and pioneer from the same era. Roger left the farm by way of his electrical engineering degree at Michigan Tech and worked for Northern Telecom for 36 years. He met his wife, Rita (nee Evans) in Edmonton and settled with her in Montreal. They were inseparable. Rita supported Roger in every way, while pursuing her own interests and work in nursing. Roger was able to stay at home longer than most in his frailty because of her formidable nursing skills, deep love and commitment. Roger taught his daughters Laurie (of Calgary) and Carmen (of Sarnia) to respect history, quality craftsmanship and take good care of their cars. His parenting mottos were, “rely on yourself” and ”don’t jump off one train until the second one is going at the same speed beside it.” His sons in law, Scott McKelvie (Sarnia) and Wayne Rosen (Calgary), learned the finer points of home maintenance and how to tell when Roger was pulling their legs. Roger was a dedicated grandfather. He taught Mark and Sophie to read the alphabet and sight words before they could walk because, “you can’t start too early for a good future.” He shared his love of all things mechanical with Benjamin and delighted in Samuel’s drawings. Roger loved fresh tomatoes, rum and coke and his own home made red wine. One of his favourite memories was hiking the Chilkoot trail when he was 69. He was an exacting carpenter, builder, and gardener. In his retirement he took long walks in Huron Woods with his and Carmen’s dogs. He scooped up bicycles left for free at the ends of driveways to rebuild and add to his fleet so that the family could ride to the beach. Some of those bikes will be available at the end of the driveway for free this spring. Of his siblings, his sister Mona and brother Tom left this world before him. His sister Anita remains. Roger spent his last months at Twin Lakes Terrace in Sarnia. Thank you to every single staff member on Oakwood for caring for him with expertise, kindness and compassion. Private celebrations of Roger’s life will be held in Ontario and Alberta this spring. “Now you dwell inside the rhythm of breath, as close to us as we are to ourselves.” John O’Donahue.
