Bonnie and I lived one street apart in Brights Grove and were best friends all through our teenage years, and later, bridesmaids for each other. In 1967 we took a madcap trip to Europe, wearing matching pantsuits, and laughed our penniless way through England, France and Spain on trains and buses, I’ll never forget the lovely time we had and the memories we made. We lost track of each other in our later years but Bonnie I will always remember your smile and will miss you.

1929 - August 6, 2025
Geraldine Mathieu Burney Elliott It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Geraldine Mathieu Elliott on August 6, 2025. Geraldine (Geri) Mathieu Burney was born on June 10, 1929 in Washington D.C. Her family moved to Louisiana and she eventually studied literature at Louisiana State University where she was named the ‘sweetheart of Sigma Chi’. In 1949 she met her life-long partner, Owen Forbes Elliott from Delaware Ontario. Tenacious, creative, sociable, and resourceful, Geri was keenly interested in all things, with a particular passion for nature, art, music, playing bridge, puzzles and travelling. In addition to being a loving mother, devoted daughter and supporting wife, Geri was a past member of the IODE and DAR. Geri had a great sense of humor and was a terrific cook. Tony's passion for his Italian heritage was evident in every aspect of his life. He kept traditions alive through annual family gatherings, including the September tomato sauce weekend and the January sausage, salami, and Italian cured meats weekend. His weekly homemade pasta and pizza dough delighted his family and friends, bringing a taste of Italy to their Canadian home. An avid outdoorsman, Tony found joy in fishing along the shores of Lake Huron and the St. Clair River, passing his love of the sport to his sons and grandchildren. In his earlier years, he dedicated time to training and racing prize pigeons. Tony was also a talented artist, creating beautiful drawings for his beloved grandchildren that will be treasured for generations to come. Tony's green thumb was evident in his meticulously tended garden, where he spent countless hours cultivating flowers, fruits and vegetables. He loved to travel back to his home country of Italy, sharing its beauty and culture with his family. Above all, Tony treasured every moment spent with his beloved wife Silvana, their love story spanning over five decades. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Bayshore Home Health Sarnia, especially Richard and Patty, for their compassionate care and support during Tony's final months. Tony's warm smile, kind heart, and zest for life will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His legacy lives on through the love he shared, the traditions he maintained, and the memories he created with his family and friends. Celebrations for Tony will begin with visitation at the McKenzie & Blundy Funeral Home & Cremation Centre, 431 N. Christina St., Sarnia on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, from 1 to 3 pm and 6 to 8 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Benedict’s Church on Thursday, July 31 st at 11 a.m. The mass will be live streamed - Entombment will follow at Resurrection Mausoleum. Bonnie Lynn Yates
1944 - July 7, 2025
Bonnie Lynn Yates passed away on Monday, July 7, 2025. She was born November 12, 1944 in Chicoutimi Quebec. The oldest child and only daughter of the late Jessie and Bill Yates. Bonnie spent most of her 80 years happily living in Sarnia and Bright's Grove. Throughout her life, our Mother worked many jobs and made friends easily. She loved people and had a keen sense of style. Mum carried herself with class and dignity through all of life's ups and downs and she instilled resilience in all of us. First and foremost, Mum was a homemaker. Family was always the focus of her time, energy and attention. She kept herself busy cooking, cleaning, decorating, healing, entertaining, counselling and comforting. Mum was a giver and she taught us all a masterclass in that. Her legacy will live on in the kind and humble hearts she nurtured. Bonnie exemplified the extraordinary, while living what appeared to be an ordinary life. Mum gave everything she had until her last breath. We will forever be grateful that she loved us and we'll miss her everyday. Bonnie will be dearly missed by her son; Chris (Teena) Burley, Daughter; Sherryl Burley Marcoux. Grandchildren; Jacob (Rebecca), Yazmine (Jake), Hayden (Chantal), Zander (Alysia), Gavin, Quinlan and Declan. Brother; Carl (Christine) Yates. Sister-in-law; Mary Lou McMahon. Nephews & Nieces; Jeff (Shannon) & Jon (Carly) Yates, Shaun (Tammy) Burley, Steven (Janine) McMahon & Shelby (Dan) Wilkins and the late Shannon (Shane) Burley. Special Friends; Steve (Marilyn) Burley, Margaret Overton and Pam Steele. Predeceased by Jon, Stuart, Linda, Irene and Lloyd Burley. We are grateful for the exceptional care our Mother received over the last year and a half. Special Thanks to staff at Bayshore particularly Blaine, Mel and Edith, Bluewater Health Palliative Care Staff; especially the care of Dr. Kim, Dr. McSweeney, Dr Al, Dr. Crombeen and Dr. Lilly. Waldemar "Wally" Henne
1935 - July 6, 2025
The Life of Wally Henne. Waldemar (Wally) Henne was born in Pforzheim, Germany on March 12, 1935 to Erna & Walter Henne, as first of 5 children. They all survived WWII and the bombing of their hometown. He trained to be a certified watchmaker and worked as such for a few years in Pforzheim and Munich. In 1956 he decided to emigrate to Calgary, Alberta where he met Elly, an immigrant herself from Switzerland, in 1964 and they married in 1965. In 1971 they decided to move to Sarnia, Ontario. Where, in 1973 they opened Exquisite China on Christina Street, which eventually became Henne's Jewellery, and they operated it until their retirement in 1997, when Markus their oldest son took over. Elly & Wally raised their 3 sons in Sarnia - Markus and Daniel born in Calgary and Francis born in Sarnia. Wally is survived by his wife Elly of 60 years, his sons Markus and his children Marika (Dhruv), Chase and Mason; Daniel (Lisa); Francis and his son Max. Predeceased by his parents Erna & Walter Henne, sister-in-law Imme and brother-in-law Bernhard Scharpfenecker all of Germany, daughter-in-law Joerika, grandsons Merrik and Mathew of Sarnia. Survived by brothers Reinhard (Inge) and Dieter, sisters Edeltraut and Rita (Gerd) and several nieces and nephews all of Germany. Wally was an active member of the Sarnia Kiwanis Club (later Sarnia Golden K), the Lambton Outdoor Club and the Masterswimming of Ontario and Canada. At 64 he took part in a cycling and camping tour across Canada. He also did numerous cycling tours in Canada and Europe, alone and in groups. His last 40km ride was with his son Dan and his wife Lisa in October 2024. He hiked through his beloved Black Forest in Germany twice, once alone and once with his son Dan. But his passion was swimming, where he competed provincially, nationally and internationally, bringing home lots of medals, mostly gold. His last competition was in 2023. At 88 years he broke several provincial records in his age group. Whenever somebody, either family, friends or clubs, needed a helping hand, he was always there. In late December 2024 his health started to decline, although he was able to celebrate his 60th anniversary and his 90th birthday with family and friends. Soon afterwards he was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of ALS. With the help of "Carepartners", "Ontario Health at Home", "Bayshore and their palliative care team" and the "VON", EIly was able to care for Wally at home. On July 6, 2025 with Elly, with his family at his side and the aid of MAID he left us peacefully. Arrangements entrusted to the McKenzie & Blundy Funeral Home & Cremation Centre, 519-344-3131. Irene, Les and Rich I had to revisit fond memories of your Mom and Dad…visits to Maxwell Street and your Mom’s fantastic cabbage rolls. They were such wonderful friends to my Dad through some tough times. Their kindness and the “Polka Dots” made us smile. I still have the music stands they had made up for their gigs at the Polish Hall . She is reunited with Louie and no doubt doing a mean polka while Dad belts out the Beer Barrel Polka! Wishing you all peace. Pam
